João Coelho is a true documentary photographer. He works on projects slowly, without haste, never satisfied with his work until it’s complete. It’s no surprise that his return home to Angola, after years of being away, inspired him to come into deep contact with his land and its’ people.
He looks for stories and when he finds them, he tells them well. This is the third story he has told me and it is so beautiful that it deserves a book.
The choice of the lens, a deep wide-angle, violent but perfect black and white, and above all the photographer's ability to live with his protagonists, becoming part of them, almost invisible, gave birth to this beautiful testimony.
João Coelho was born in Angola in 1964 but was forced to leave in his early teens, due to the war of independence. It was in Portugal that he spent most of his life; returning to his native Angola in 2007.
João’s interest in photography had lain dormant for many years, until 2018. Then, working as a consultant on projects for the public sector, he found his motivation to pick up the camera again; responding to the emotional and sentimental appeal of the land that he left so abruptly in early adolescence.
